ASTM WK98507
ASTM E1823 “Standard Terminology Relating to Fatigue and Fracture Testing currently” Annex A2 “Designation Codes for Specimen Configuration, Applied Loading, and Crack or Notch Orientation”, Section A2.4 “Designation Code for Crack or Notch Orientation”, is currently written for conventional metallic products with specimens having orientations defined relative to the longitudinal (L), transverse (T) and short (S) directions for rectangular shaped products and longitudinal (L), radial (R) and circumferential (C) directions for cylindrical product forms. This standard test method is now being used for additively manufactured materials, and these L-T-S and L-C-R coordinate systems are not appropriate for these types of products. This work item is intended to address the use of this standard for additively manufactured products and incorporate specimen orientations defined relative to build direction and loading direction relative to the X-Y-Z coordinate system. Similar updates have already been incorporated into B769 double-shear (already approved as an Annex in existing standard, under B07.05) and B831 slotted shear (already approved as an Annex in existing standard, under B07.05). Additionally, a work item is open for E238 pin bearing (WK88344, under E28.04) to add a similar Annex.
