Work Item

ASTM WK84584

Revision of F1148-22 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Home Playground Equipment

Rationale

In response to CPSC reports of strangulations and in order to create greater awareness to the dangers of strangulation of children while playing on home playground equipment, the ASTM F15.09 task group and a Human Factor’s expert suggested using a pictogram such as the one as shown below (provided by the CPSC in the Summary of Playground Surfacing Focus Groups by Stephen Harsanyi for the CPSC in January of 2018) or a similar pictogram. This imagery allows for a quick visual, while also promoting a greater awareness to non-readers and multi-lingual understanding of hazards.
